Baxley is the shiz. The is so funny and makes chemistry way more fun. He
previously worked in the extreme real chemist world, and that certainly
gives him a lot of insight. I thought the labs were a little lame, but its
not that bad, and the lecture makes up for it. The tests are hard! But if
you study and do everything he suggest, you will be FINE. It's 5 units...so
know that its gonna be work, but it is so worth it. Baxley is amazing,
trust me.

Dr Baxley is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had especially
considering that Chemistry is not an easy subject, and he is not an easy
teacher. You will definately earn your grade in this class. He makes
Chemistry fun (as crazy as that sounds) and his teaching style is great. If
you work hard and do the suggested problems and extra work, you will
succeed in this class. Also, I was a student that needed extra help and he
was always in his office hours and his e-mail response time was remarkable
and very helpful. Hands down take Dr. Baxley for Chemistry!!!

Dr. Baxley has to be one of the best teachers at cuesta college. He is
super dedicated to his students... if you have a question you can e-mail
him and he will answer you in less than 10 minutes.. no exageration.. he
gives good concise examples in class.. He worries a lot about students
learning and gives a lot of help.. dont expect the class to be easy
though.. it is a very hard class and you need to do all the suggested
problems he gives and read the book.

Great instructor! Although his teaching style is awesome, Chem 1A is a lot
of work. If you put in the time and do all the recommended assignments
whether they are due or not, you should be able to understand the concepts
and earn a decent grade. Challenging class.

Dr. B has got to be the best teacher I have yet encountered at Cuesta.
Don't mistake me, this class is not easy, but Dr. B is the best coach you
could ever ask for.
He gives good lecture- clear and concise
He makes enough jokes to keep things feeling good.
He does NOT miss class sessions or office hours.
Online questions and e-mails are answered nearly immediatly.
Tests and quizzes are fair and graded realistically.

Chemistry is hard my friends. You HAVE to read the book, and you HAVE to
do the homework. There just isn't enough class time for Dr. B to go over
everything. He does expect a lot from his students, but he's an amazing
teacher and if you pay attention and ask him questions he'll spend all his
free time trying to help you. I definetally reccommend him over Dr. Clark.
If you want to understand, and do well in chemistry take Dr. Baxley for 1A
and 1B (take Susan McClure for chem 10, she's amazing!)

the homework. If you do ALL the homework and pay attention, you can do well
in his chem classes. His classes can be very hard, but the homework will
save your grade

Great class, great professor. So much better than most of the Pompous Poly
Profs. Dr. B does a great job of making chemistry interesting and
relevant, too bad more science teachers aren't like him. I can't believe
that I've learned so much in his class, mostly due to his encouragement.

A great guy with a superb dedication to his work and expertise, knows so
much that I am baffled. Unfortunately, this class helped me change majors
and realize I have talents in other fields. The opportunities are there to
succeed, he provides that, he cares about you. We have to care about the
subject, because it is a foundation "for us future scientists, doctors, and
engineers." (he said more or less) I didn't click as a student in his
class, but that wasn't his fault. You have to study the book and seriously
put time to succeed. The tests were challenging, get a good dedicated study
group and you will do fine. Hard to say what he could do better, but it
just wasn't my class.

website at http://academic.cuesta.edu/gbaxley/baxley.html amd see how many
assignments he gives. But Dr. B is really great to work with, and you will
learn a ton and be glad you took the class. Go to class, pay attention and
do the work, and life is good with Dr. Baxley. He's the man!

He is a great teacher who wants you to think for your self. At the begining
of many classes teachers stress the importantce of setting time aside to
study, and then you find out you can get in done in half or a third of the
time, but chemistry will require you take the time.
This isn't a class you can just float through, but that goes for this
class regardless of the teacher. Mr.B gives every oppertunity to help us
succeed, he is interesting, and funny. Your grade will be a direct
reflection of how much you put in. this is college people, thats why you
get payed more with a degree!

Dr. Baxley knows his stuff. He is very knowledgeable of chemistry. His
class seems hard but all chemistry classes are. He it always cracking jokes
in class to make his lectures more enjoyable. He helps all of his students
out and will spend extra time on problems if students don’t understand.
Make sure you go to every lecture bc all of his lecture reflect on the past
lectures. If you haven’t taken chemistry in a while don’t take CHEM 1A bc
it is very challenging. Best professor I had at cuesta so far. Overall he
is a very good professor that knows his subject and very helpful to all of
his students.

How can you possibly give Dr. B a grade of D or F? He doesn't "fry"
knowledge, he makes you think and improve as a student and scientist. I've
had a lot of science classes at two other schools, and Dr. Baxley is FAR
and away THE best chem teacher you could hope for. Now that I'm at Poly, I
realize how lucky I was to have a teacher with high standards who helped me
be a better student.

Chem 1A/1B is hard, but Dr. B gives you all the tools you need. You have
to go to class and practice how to use the tools. If you're serious about
science, take him. If you're not serious, you can still learn interesting
stuff. If you don't want to work or learn, or do well once you leave
Cuesta, don't blame him for your poor performance.

Baxley is a FANTASTIC instructor, but his course is not easy. Always
available during posted office hours. I feel very fortunate to have had him
for Chem 1A.

Some students don't like his class because they felt it was to hard. As a
"re-entry" student, having had to forsake my education earlier in life to
raise a family and be gainfully employed, I appreciate teachers like Mr.
Baxley. He is extremely dedicated and you will never forget his "gummy
bear" experiment!

I've read the previous reviews and believe me they cant be further from the
truth. Dr. B is a great teacher and judging by the batch of students he had
i can tell why most of them wrote bad things. He asssigns homework as a
suggetion therefore if youre like me and dont need to do homework to learn
it works out great, however if you need the homework its there for you. he
understands that people learn at different speeds and in different ways,
and he is always accommodating. No im not some stay-at-home mom who this is
the only class I took. i took a full load, and just the same came out with
more knowledge than i ever thaought possible. Go into this class with an
open mind, hes a great teacher and an even greater guy.

I myself only got a C in his class, but he is an extremely nice man. He is
approachable, and more than willing to help and give his time to those who
ask. Dr. Baxley knows his stuff. He's a doctor for goodness sakes. I do
agree that, at times he moved a little fast, was a mite confusing at times,
and gave a lot of homework, but he was open to student suggestions and did
his best to fix the issue. If you do not know what he is talking about, all
you have to do is ask and he will be more than willing to help. If you are
a serious student, and really work and pay attention in his class, you
could do pretty well. It is my personal belief, that some of these reviews
were written in anger and frustration after viewing class or test grades.
Dr. Baxley is a very nice man and is there for his students, but one MUST
to put in the effort in order to get the good grades. If you're up for it,
this class is not all that bad.

This class was easy and Dr. B was very helpful if you ever needed any help.
I had not taken a chemistry class in over six years and I was able to
follow him fine through lecture. This is a five unit class and some effort
is required, but not much. This is just an entry level chemistry class and
if you are struggling with this class you should consider changing your
major to a non-science degree or memorize the phrase "Would you like fries
with that?" His test and quizes are not overly challenging, and he is a
very fair grader. Most of his questions are from the book or out of his
lectures. He is not the type of person who tries purposly to trick you. He
even handed out a little extra credit, I mean come on this college
proffessors should not give extra credit. This class is a good preperation
for more andvanced college classes and life in general.

The same thing happened to me as to the first poster: that is to say i lost
all my knowledge from Chem10. Also he tests on subjects he has not taught,
the class average is a C- and is at nearly 1/3 of the total people we
started with.

This review is kind of pointless because he is the ONLY teacher for general
chemistry...so have fun and try to ignore him as best you can and teacher
yourself from the book

This teacher knows his material but does not know how to convey it to his
students. It helps to be smart because he goes through the material fast.
You'll learn alot because you'll basically have to teach yourself. He
carries his 'think for yourself' to the extreme. His test and quizzes are
hard and often do not follow his lectures or homework. He gives
homework(not always collected) but doesn't cover the concepts in class. Not
much choice in teachers since he is the only one teaching general
chemistry. However, he does want to his students to succeed and is generous
with his time and assistance.

He knows his material, and this class is very generous, as compared to what
you would be doing at another university. This teacher is helpful, and it
doesn't help that most of the students in the class don't know what they're
supposed to, coming in. If you have some basic understanding of Chemistry,
the class goes pretty well, and there aren't many extraneous assignments.

Okay,he might not explain everything but he teaches what you need to know
in class. This is a tough class for someone who hasn't taken chem for a

Stay away from this proffesor.

I'm not one to speak badly about someone but Dr. Baxley has managed to
completly fry all the chemistry knowlege I had after CHEM10.

He's managed to chase off nearly half his students withing one week and
the class GPA stands at a D. His solution to the problem is to give you a
daily quizz.

BTW, he doesn't give you half the info you need. He just tells you to check
his website and/or read the book.

In short the guy is worthless. As long as I can survive and get a C I'll be
happy.
